Nicholas Grubbs is a Brooklyn based dancer, choreographer, & teacher. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and is a certified yoga teacher through the Perri Institute for Mind and Body. Nicholas has performed as a company member with LoudHoundMovement, Bryn Cohn + Artists, and e r a Dance Collective, has performed works by choreographers including Bill T. Jones, Merce Cunningham, Shannon Gillen, and Seán Curran, and was featured in Xavier Cha’s performance art piece Buffer for BAM’s 2017 Next Wave Festival. His work has been performed at the Ailey Citigroup Theatre, Gallim Dance, NARS Foundation, the Harlem Repertory Theatre, and NYU's Jack Crystal Theatre. Nicholas has studied under renowned instructors such as Gus Solomons Jr., Pamela Pietro, Phyllis Lamhut, and Rashaun Mitchell, and received additional training at the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance and Springboard Danse Montréal, where he collaborated with Maxine & Conor Doyle of Punchdrunk and Banning Bouldin of New Dialect. Nicholas was a co-founder and artistic director of FLO_collective (2014-2015), a site-specific performance company.
Nicholas’ process seeks to examine movement under as many lenses as possible. He is currently interested in exploring the difference between movement’s ability to trigger emotion and emotion’s ability to trigger movement, the depth of communication available via movement versus language, and the idea of movement as an entity that can be stripped of meaning entirely. His work hopes to uncover intensity within silliness, personal within universal, choice within structure, complexity within simplicity, theatricality within humanity, audiences within performers, and vice versa in all cases. nicholasgrubbs.com // @nicholasgrubbs
'dig out the joy' is an movement-based performance. It is an exercise in trusting impulse, an exploration of the relationship between structure and freedom, a rejection of movement as meaning, and an attempt to move the dancers as close to a flow state as possible. This work seeks to find a space where our need for expression can be satisfied in a way that's streamlined and pure, raw but not tied to specific story-lines or emotions.
